Boston Mom Admits She’s Not 25-year-old White, Male Harvard Grad; Writes Sketch Comedy Anyway
8th Episode of podcast features Antiques Roadshow parody, female superhero at a bar, and an audio “comic strip”
Watertown, MA; February 26, 2016 – The Corner Store Variety Show goes where very few sketch comedy shows go: into everyday women’s lives. The audio-only podcast, produced by Watertown writer Anita Weiner, includes sketches about a family trying to outrun the playground police, The Dating Game for moms, and a mother who gets a surgically implanted third arm so she can finally “get it all done.” The podcast has just released its eighth episode. Listen to the show’s parody of PBS’ Antiques Roadshow here. Whole episodes and individual sketches are available at iTunes, Stitcher, RSS, and at the show’s website, www.cornerstorevarietyshow.com.
The current episode runs just over fourteen minutes and features three sketches: a parody of PBS’ Antiques Roadshow, an installment of the show’s audio “comic strip,” The Adventures of TempGirl, and a sketch about two women — a superhero and a supervillain — who share a drink and blow off steam about henchmen, equal pay, and world domination.
The former indie filmmaker and mother of two uses personal experience and current trends as a jumping off point for her sketches. “I like to take the mundane, blow it up, and inject some absurdity.” Weiner says her sketch writing is highly influenced by sketch comedy shows of the ‘70s and ‘80s, as well as screwball comedy of the 1930s. “When the aliens come, what happens if they’re made of chocolate? And hasn’t somebody committed murder by reprogramming the GPS? This is the kind of stuff that goes through my head most of the time. It’s a wonder I’m able to brush my teeth and watch General Hospital every day.”
With spec scripts in hand, Weiner was ready to move to Los Angeles to pursue television writing when she met her now-husband and planted roots in Boston. She created the podcast after her youngest was born. “We’ll head West when the kids are in college. Until then, the podcast is a way for me to keep doing my thing and raise a family.”
